The Bikes of Spring

The last days of February into early March are golden days on the bike. Spring races have not started yet and the last weeks of base miles progress into longer and longer rides. The days of mind-numbing structure: intervals, sprints and hill repeats have not begun in earnest or morphed into the grind of racing season.

I love training in the early days of spring; Leaving in the frosty, early morning dressed in booties, leg and arm warmers; Jersey pockets stuffed with fig bars, gels and bananas. Returning home in the warm, mid-afternoon sun, hungry and with jersey pockets full of all of the clothes stripped off during the day’s ride, the chemical taste of road salt on my lips and the gritty feel of road grime on my legs. I take a bagel into the hot shower, wash the road off of my body and then fall into bed, satisfied and exhausted from the day’s work.
